Championing Scottish traditional music, and giving a platform to its finest emerging talent, the Battle of the Folk Bands is an annual highlight for Celtic Connections audiences. The popular event sees great new bands competing for the prize of a coveted gig at the following year’s festival.
Our 2023 Battle of the Folk Bands was closely fought by some outstanding acts before Tarran – an innovative new young trad folk band – won the title. The Glasgow-based quartet features Malachy Arnold on harp, Breanna Wilson on fiddle, Rory Stark on whistle and bodhrán, and Sophie Joint on piano. Boasting an impressive Scottish musical heritage and a host of individual awards, the four musicians came together in 2019 to form Tarran and take part in the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections 2020.
The Battle of the Folk Bands is always an unmissable showcase of the best up-and-coming talent in the genre, and previous years’ winners include leading acts such as Dosca and Eabhal – so watch this space for our reveal on who’s competing this year!
