Celtic Connections proudly presents Across The Evening Sky: Josienne Clarke Sings The Songs Of Sandy Denny and Janice Burns & Jon Doran
Award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer Josienne Clarke has released several EPs and studio albums, garnering plenty of acclaim along the way. As a songwriter, Clarke has been hailed as “extraordinary” by Mojo, “gently exquisite” by The Observer and “full of depth” by The Telegraph — but for this performance, she’s paying tribute to another truly great female singer/songwriter, Sandy Denny.
Denny’s flame burned bright and all too brief, but her music has stood the test of time, marking her out as one of the most influential artists in the history of British folk music. From Fairport Convention to Fotheringay to four solo albums and a wealth of posthumous releases, she is widely regarded as Britain’s finest female singer-songwriter. Here, Clarke lends her beautiful, emotive vocals to mine Denny’s rich and storied back catalogue.
Janice Burns & Jon Doran are an award-winning Anglo-Scottish duo who came together after discovering a shared love of traditional music. Their compelling storytelling comes alive through tight vocal harmonies and sensitive interplay between mandolin, bouzouki and guitar.
Janice & Jon released their debut album, No More the Green Hills, in Autumn 2022. The album had overwhelmingly positive feedback, finding its place in the Official UK Folk Albums Chart, as well as gaining airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Scotland. More recently, they released their second album, Great Joy to the New, in December 2024.
