For Burns Night, you are invited to join in Glasgow's big outdoor Strip the Willow dance down the recently reopened pedestrian thoroughfare of Sauchiehall Street, to celebrate a new year, and new street. This event, led by professional dancers and a band of pipers from The National Piping Centre, encourages people of all ages to come together and celebrate the street’s heritage through dance and music.
Free event - register to join us and stay in touch with information about the day by emailing amcv@glasgowlife.org.uk. Drop-ins on the day are also welcomed.
Sauchiehall Street’s name originates from the Scots language, and means “Willow Meadow”, referring to a time when the area was no more than a moorland lined with willow trees. Dance also forms a part of the street’s heritage, from the Locarno Ball Room to the many dance halls, music venues and club nights which live on in the memories Glaswegians across generations.
This project is a part of the Sauchiehall Street Culture and Heritage District development phase programme, bringing people in Glasgow into the conversation about Sauchiehall Street’s vibrant heritage and future renewal. This work is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and in partnership with Glasgow City Council, as part of Glasgow 850 celebrations.
