The Orchestral Qawwali Project presents a captivating performance of an ancient but wonderfully contemporary artform.
They blend Sufi poetry, Indian classical dance and orchestral arrangements. The show is written and directed by composer, Rushil, and combines the soaring vocals of Abi Sampa (a leading light of the Asian fusion scene). Qawwali is a form of devotional singing originating in the 13th-century Indian sub-continent but enjoying a resurgence thanks to this cultural initiative. Formed in 2020, the project has attracted high praise from audiences and critics. The group returns to Celtic Connections following an ecstatic reception in 2022.
Vedanth and Gurupriya bring the music of dreams to Celtic Connections 2023. During the Covid pandemic, Mumbai-born vocalist, guitarist and composer Vedanth Bharadwaj and classical Indian singer and arts curator Gurupriya Atreya conducted a unique workshop called 'Sing A Lullaby'. Over the course of a year, they researched and documented 52 lullabies in 38 world languages, creating a space where stories, warmth and comfort could be shared during that challenging time. Individually renowned for their work on stage, film and television, the pair combine influences from Bhakti, Sufi, folk music and storytelling traditions.
