Talk about a match made in heaven. The pairing of fiddler Liz Carroll with guitarist John Doyle unites two of today’s leading torch-bearers for Irish-American music, whose artistry continues to set new standards for their peers and successors. Carroll’s outstanding achievements were officially honoured at the highest level with a National Heritage Award Fellowship in 1994, recognising her as a “Master Traditional Artist who has contributed to the shaping of our artistic traditions and to preserving the cultural diversity of the United States” – which is as good a summing-up of her career as any.
Doyle originally made his name as a member of the acclaimed Irish-American outfit Solas, pioneering the high-speed, percussive, rhythmically sophisticated guitar technique that has since been copied – but never bettered – across the Celtic world. Since leaving Solas, Doyle has released two highly-praised solo albums, Evening comes Early and Wayward Son. Following on from Carroll and Doyle’s avidly-awaited joint recording debut, In Play, last autumn, tonight’s duo performance adopts the same one-on-one format – no frills, no extra guests – that features to such dazzling effect on the album.
